Hirsutisim in Females

Often hirsutism occurs with no identifiable cause.

Risk factors

Family history.

Ancestry. Women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian ancestry are more likely to have more body hair with no identifiable cause than are other women.

Hirsutism can be emotionally consuming . Some women feel self-conscious about having unwanted hair. Some develop depression. Also, although hirsutism doesn't cause physical complications, the underlying cause of a hormonal imbalance can.

If you have hirsutism and irregular periods, you might have polycystic ovary syndrome, which can inhibit fertility. Women who take certain medications to treat hirsutism should avoid pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.

Hirsutism generally isn't preventable. But losing weight if you're overweight might help reduce hirsutism, particularly if you have polycystic ovary syndrome.

Hirsutism is a disorder in women in which you have a lot of hair growing in places where it usually does just for men. The hair is often dark and rough instead of the light, fine “peach fuzz” that covers most of the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will my hirsutism ever go away?

Because it usually is not possible to cure the hormonal problem that causes hirsutism, ongoing medical treatment is required to manage it. Hirsutism will frequently return if medical treatment is stopped. Sometimes a combination of treatment methods is needed for best results.

  • What is the cause of hirsutism in females?

Hirsutism is caused by an excess production or action of hormones called androgens, secreted by the ovaries or adrenal glands and produced locally in the hair follicle

  • What foods to avoid if you have hirsutism?

Avoid refined foods, such as white breads, pastas, and especially sugar. Eat fewer red meats and more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy, if no allergy), or beans for protein. Use healthy oils in foods, such as olive oil or vegetable oil.

Hirsutism may be caused by:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This disorder, which often starts with puberty, causes an imbalance of sex hormones. Over years, PCOS may gradually result in excess hair growth, irregular periods, obesity, infertility and sometimes multiple cysts on the ovaries.

  • Cushing syndrome. This happens when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol. It can progress from your adrenal glands making too much cortisol or from taking medications.

  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This genetic condition is characterized by abnormal production of steroid hormones, including cortisol and androgen, by your adrenal glands.

  • Tumors. Rarely, an androgen-secreting tumor in the ovaries or adrenal glands can cause hirsutism.
